Tulalip Tribal Court
In Honor of
Oscar Carl Jones, Sr.
12/17/1878 – 02/03/1972
First Tulalip Tribal Judge
Presided 1935-1972
In the early days of the court, there was
no courtroom. Court was presided over
and held at the home of Oscar Carl
Jones, Sr., a Tulalip Tribal Member.
Carl was a logger and a Beach Sein
Fisherman by trade in the mid-1950’s
and up until 1967. Judge Jones held the position as Bishop of the Full
Gospel Shaker Church and held Shaker Church meetings in his home. Judge
Jones was also a Tulalip Board of Director and signed on the Original Tribal
Constitution and By Laws of the Tulalip Tribes of Washington.

• Maternal Grandparents Robert Suit-sahl and

• Brothers and Sisters: William “Popeye”, Lena Jefferson Harrison, Rosa
Weil Steltz, Mary Hatch, Susie, George, Sr, Eva & Sarah Jones.
• Married Annie Kusshi 1911 (Yakima) – No children
• Married Josephine Smartlowit 1/14/1916, Yakima
Children: Edward “Buck” & Katherine Jones
• Married Cecilia Jackson 1920 (4/4 Snoqualmie) – Children: Lillian Fryberg
Williams, Lena “Shorty” Jimicum, Juanita “Bipsy”, William “Lawrence”,
Oscar Carl “Poly”, Rosemary “Dolly” Stewart Hill. Leonard, Robert
“Bobby” and Richard “Johnny” Jones.
• Carl and Cecilia adopted their grandson Dennis “Jerry” Jones
on February 28, 1947.
